Project Description

132/33kV substation – Switch Room Building

    Steelwork

    Project Objective

Supply and install a switch room building for their client Scottish & Southern Energy Networks, Access platforms and stairs that sits on top of 40nr 339mm diameter tubular bearing piles. These piles were elevated above ground level to build a new switch room within a live substation making the new equipment Flood Resistant.

    What we did

The client required a fast-track solution for the install meaning the steel structure had to be progressed while the Circular piles were installed rather than the more conventional approach of wait to survey the piles retrospectively to set out the building, this proved challenging but not impossible with a couple of adjustments needed at the base of some columns to keep the building in line thanks to the thoroughness of our surveyors, our drawing office and the Instalcom design team.

The erection of the switch room structure was made challenging due to the small footprint of the site and the added complexity of being within a live and operational 132kV site and adjacent to the Paddington to Cardiff Main Line. Fussey overcome these challenges to successfully and safely deliver the project on program.
